What the speed test shows

  • Your Google PageSpeed scores for Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices and SEO, from Google's own phone test.
  • Your real visitors' Core Web Vitals from Chrome users over the last 28 days, when Google has enough visits to report them. This is the part Google ranks on.
  • The files holding up your first screen, by name, from your home page and a product page.
  • Your heaviest apps and scripts, and which of them can safely wait.
  • How to fix each one in plain English, whether you do it yourself or have us do it.

How it differs from other speed tests

PageSpeed Insights is Google's own report and the one that matters, but it lists dozens of technical items without saying which Shopify app caused them. Our test runs the same Google test and names the apps. Want to read Google's report yourself? Every item explained.

GTmetrix and Pingdom time your page from their own servers. They're useful for load times, but their grades aren't the score Google shows you.

Shopify's web performance report in your admin shows Core Web Vitals from your real visitors. It tells you whether there's a problem, not what's causing it.

What's a good Shopify speed score?

Google colours the score green from 90 to 100, orange from 50 to 89 and red below 50. For a Shopify store with a few apps, 90 or more on the phone test takes work: even Shopify's own Dawn demo store, with no apps at all, started late on Google's test in 4 of 6 runs we made. More useful targets:

  • Real visitors pass Core Web Vitals: main content within 2.5 s, taps answered within 200 ms, and layout shift under 0.1. That's what Google ranks on.
  • Phone score in the 90s when Google's test starts on time, and as high as your page allows when it starts late.
  • Judged on 4 or more runs, never one. The same unchanged page can score 65 one minute and 85 the next.

Why your score changes every time you test

Google's test runs on shared computers, and your apps finish loading at slightly different moments each time. Sometimes the first frame arrives a whole second late, and everything downloaded meanwhile counts against you. So a store can score 95 and then 75 with nothing changed. Why the PageSpeed score swings.

Is the speed test really free?

Yes. No sign-up and no card. We keep the address you tested, so if you later ask us to fix it, we can pick up where you left off.

Do you need my Shopify login or password?

No. The test reads your store's public pages, the same way a shopper's phone does. It needs only your web address.

Does it work on websites that aren't Shopify?

It reads any public website and shows the same checks, so the tips still apply. Our fixes are for Shopify stores only.

How often should I test my store?

After you add an app, change or update your theme, or put a big banner or video on the home page. Those are the usual reasons a fast store slows down. Compare 4 or more runs before deciding anything changed.

Can you fix what the test finds?

Yes. Shopify speed fixes are S$350 once, including GST, built on a copy of your theme and tested on Google's machine before anything goes live, with a refund if the median score doesn't rise. How Shopify speed optimisation works.
